CSS receives Sr. Marmion memorials

Sr. Marmion Howe

Memorial gifts for Sr. Marmion Howe, OSB, one of the first executive directors of Catholic Social Services who died Nov. 26, 2020 at the age of 100, will benefit Catholic Social Services.

The Benedictine sister was known and loved all across western South Dakota during her many different careers: Medical technician, college professor, microbiology scientist, mental health counselor and spiritual director, among others. You can donate in her memory here.

She was 65 when she earned a master’s degree in counseling from South Dakota State University and worked for CSS for several years.  She was recognized for her counseling work at CSS satellite offices in Rosebud, St. Francis, Mission and Eagle Butte, and at the Pennington County Jail.

She was also the founding force behind the CSS Palm Sunday Brunch, which she began by inviting a few friends to join her for brunch and donate to CSS. The brunch has grown over the years into the agency’s largest annual fundraiser.

Sr. Marmion’s generosity to CSS continues in death, as the Benedictine community to which she belonged for more than 80 years has directed all gifts made in her memory to Catholic Social Services.
